Comparison | Don’t Compare Your Growth

“Never compare your day one to someone else’s year ten.” This is something I tell myself often.

Bonjour mes amies! Before leaving for France, I had a mini-breakdown. I shared avec mes amies via a weekly vlog (click here to watch) that I’d begun feeling less than.

Despite all that I have accomplished, I felt something shifting within. Those feelings projected while on the phone avec a dear ami when I caught myself doing the unthinkable while packing for France:

I Googled: Fall fashion trends

Why are you doing that? My trusted amie questioned.

I can honestly say that I have NEVER done such a thing. I have NEVER been a trendy person. My style has evolved throughout the years, but for the most part, minus une petite weight gain after having le bebe, most wouldn’t be able to tell what’s a #TBT (throwback Thursday) or an #OOTD (outfit of the day) photo.

My hair, my style of glasses (click here to read how I source my glasses), and the silhouettes of my dresses are pretty much the same.

So why was I suddenly interested in acquiring what everyone else had?

Social Media

I traveled the world, have lived all over the world, had a clothing line in showrooms, worked behind the scenes of Milan fashion week, studied couture in Paris, and beaucoup more, before Instagram.

What I share avec mes amies, was my life before the Insta.

With all that I have experienced and accomplished in my own right, I felt myself wanting to be a part of the in-crowd.

While many would be reluctant to admit it, influencers are also influenced.

Wanting to look “the part,” and sadly, comparison began to make me question my space in the world of content creation.

Extend yourself grace, mes amies. It is natural to see the successes or lives of others and want whatever aspect of it that interests you. It only becomes unhealthy when you find yourself changing who you are.

I am happy to report that I arrived in Paris avec moi personal style in tow.

Because of social media, I felted a bit embarrassed that I didn’t get invited to beaucoup shows for Paris fashion week. But as fate would have it, I had the absolute pleasure of attending deux shows.

Mais, here’s what’s truly embarrassing. I felt ashamed for not being at beaucoup shows, but do you know what brought me to France (pre-fashion) week?

Joey-en-Josas, France

I was invited to give a MASTERCLASS at a historical French university (click here to watch my France and Paris vlogs.)

My path and yours will not look like others but know wholeheartedly that that is better than okay; it’s YOUR journey.

Be encouraged mes amies, and don’t let comparison or the fear of others (click here to read how not to internalize negative comments) stop you from pursuing your goals.

Your dreams are so much closer than they appear. Always know that I am rooting for you mes amies.

Ciao for now 💋

I SO LOVE YOUR BLOGS. I WATCHED ONE OF YOUR YOUTUBE VIDS ON BLACK WOMEN AND LUXORY AND I WAS LIKE “DID WE HAVE THIS DISCUSSION “…LOL. I AM 61 AND HAVE LOVED FASHION AND MORE FOR THE HISTORY, THE WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN AND HOW, BUT OF COURSE FOR FASHION ITSELF. I NEVER GOT THE CHANCE TO PERSUE MY CAREER, AT THAT TIME FASHION WAS SEEN AS A VIABLE CAREER, BUT BY THE GRACE OF GOD I WILL.
NO MORE COMPARING, TOO OLD NOW, LOL. THANK YOU FOR BEING YOU BUT BEING OPEN. I HOPE TO GET TO MEET YOU ON DAY. MAYBE IN PARIS SINCE I WAS SUPPOSED TO GO AND THE PANDEMIC SHUT ME DOWN.
